Qutab Minar, Delhi: One of the various landmarks of Delhi

Overview: Mehrauli, a historic village, is built around the Sufi shrine of Bakhtiyar Kaki near the famous Qutab Minar

. Archaeological Park, spread over 200 acres, has a number of historically significant monuments spread all over it. All these monuments – which belong to different periods – all have a story to tell.

Mehrauli, being one of the oldest parts of Delhi, has monuments from the Khilji period, Tughlaq period, Lodhi period, Mughal Period and also from the British era. One can see the tank where it is believed Prophet Muhammad left a mark, and also the martyrdom site of Sikh hero Banda Bahadur. There is still an empty grave which was meant for the last Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar.

The tour starts off at the Metcalfe House, which was once the tomb of Thomas Metcalfe, an Englishman who belonged to the court of Bahadur Shah Zafar. The Tour also explores Balban’s tomb, Khan Shaheed’s tomb, Jamali Kamali mosque and to the Dargah of Bakhtiyar Kaki. The Walk also explores Rajon ki Baoli, which is a large historic step-well that was created to provide water to the area.

Suitable Time: In the morning from 7.30am to 10.30am (winter) and 6.30am to 9.30am (summer)
Who Should Come: Anyone willing to walk around 4-5 km
What to Wear and Carry: Normal clothes but avoid wearing shorts. If it is winter, slight woolen may be required during morning. If it is summer, prefer light cotton clothes. Wear comfortable footwear and please carry enough bottled drinking water. Please also carry a scarf or cap to cover your head inside religious places.

Starting Point: Yogamaya temple, near Mehrauli bus terminus

How to Come to Starting Point: Take the road which leads to Mehrauli Bus terminus from the Qutb Complex. The Yogamaya temple is just before the terminus on your right. You can take an auto rickshaw from Qutab Minar Metro station or Saket Metro station. For those coming by own vehicle, parking is available opposite the Yogamaya temple on the approach road to bus terminus.
